Quick question. We have a rose bush that is going no-where. It about 2 yrs old. We did a hard prune on it in March, since it has went nuts. It is almost 5 foot tall, 3 feet wide BUT it will not bloom a rose. It will not even try to put a rose bud out. Someone told us to take off the bottom leaves? I don't understand where though because this has so many leaves, and branches. Any suggestions on getting this bush to bloom?

Found this on a garden site . May be some help to you .
There are a few reasons that a rose won't bloom. The rose is a young bush, or it is in the shade and needs more full sunlight( minmum or 6 hours), there is too much nitrogen in the fertilzer which causes it to grow leaves and canes at the expensive of flowers. The bud that was used to graft with was weak or not done correctly or it may just be a once blooming variety. Using a fertilizer with the middle number very high (phosphorus) such as one for tomatoes which require fertilizer instantly, will give the rose bush an electric prod.

Thanks for the info. I'll pick some fertilizer up tomorrow. It's in a great spot for sunshine, and the plant is about 3 yrs old. It bloomed over and over last year, so I think the fertilizer should do the trick. Thanks.

Is it a climber? Wondering why it's five feet tall this early.
Stan prunes his tea rose bushes regularly. Weekly when they're blooming. With no rain, they're not blooming much right now. The fertilizer, with water, will help a lot. We've had some "rogue" roses that didn't bloom the first year or so, then went nuts. Never the other way around.

At least someone can grow roses, I can grow orchids and most everything else great, but give me a rose and I'll kill it. :p
