My sisters and I were chatting about the places we used to go when we were young. Back in the late 60's there was a restaurant on West Broadway. It was near the WRAY radio station, on the same side of the road. We would go there after church on Sundays. I think the Kiwanis held their meetings there. Can anyone remember the name of the place? I know on the east side of town we went to a cafeteria named "Gymers". Does anyone remember that one? I think it's in the same place that Seimer's Glass is now.

If it was a squarish brick building, I know the one you mean. A juke box sat in the corner, and one of the special desserts was jello with banana slices.....at least it was special to a little kid.
I don't remember the name, but it may come to me in the middle of the night.
I want to say Tasty Freeze, but I don't think that's it.

You are right it was called "The Tasty Freeze" and I believe the Lankford family owned and ran it. The restaurant on the east side of town where Seimer's Glass presently is was called "Gymer's" and was owned and ran by Ed Gymer who worked in the tool design department at the old P&B plant that was across the street from the restaurant.

If I remember correctly, the Tasty Freeze served broasted chicken....if not broasted, it was a really good fried chicken.
(And I loved the Jello with bananas.)

Thanks for the info. I felt sure that someone at GCN would remember, and you didn't let me down! :) Blessings to you and yours.

I'm missing something on this one: Sunshine stated West Broadway, but Seimers' Glass isn't on West Broadway...or am I confused?
I don't remember Tasty Freeze, but I do recall a little, bitty place on West Broadway called Gay Dan's!!! Boy has times changed. I couldn't imagine a place of business with such a name today. I was a really little guy then and it seemed that after DQ there was nothing but corn until you got to GD's. Kind of in the middle of nowhere.

Tastee Freeze was where today's Subway is located. Burnt down and was rebuilt a couple of times.

What was the name of the root beer stand that was located where the BP station on west Broadway?

I'm not sure but it comes to mind that it was called "The Barrel"? The building was about 2 stories tall and was shaped like a wooden whiskey barrel.

She asked about two different spots, both on Broadway.
I remember Gay Dan's--that was after the Tastee Freeze was closed. We had a lot of jokes about it back then.

I remeber the root beer place that you are talking about but I thought that it set along there where the siemers glass is now and I was shaped like a big wooden root beer barrel and was called the barrel and that would of been on east broadway. That was a treat for us when dad would stop there and get the root beer in those frosty mugs.

Do you remember the "Gibson Grill" which was located in the old depot of the "Evansville and Princeton Traction Line" which was torn down when the Farmers National Bank (Citizens, 5th Third) added the back entrance to the drive-thru in back of the old downtown location. It was in operation in the 60's.

The Tastee Freeze also had awsome Beef Manhattens. That was my favorite meal when we went there after church.
We lived about 2 blocks up the street from it when it burnt down. That was the talk of the town, but all I could think about was that their 2 dogs were inside when it caught fire and survived the fire.
Scott Horn's dad was the owner of Gay Dan's. Ate there a few times, but Winklers or Dick Clark's was the "in" place to eat and cruise.
Wow, that sure is a way's back.....

I loved that place. Great coneys and orange sodas. Then we'd walk over to WRAY and request a song like "Disco duck"

located where the BP station on west Broadway? There was an ice cream stand similar to a Dairy Queen located in the 300 block of East Broadway where the BP station is now, I think it was called "Dari Delight"? Across the street was the old Boy's Club.

Utley's Soft Serve was where BP is now. Used to walk there from my sister's house, as a kid, and get her root beer floats.

I think you both are correct. The place was originally called "Dari Delight" and later changed oweners and renamed "Utley's Soft Serve".

Does anyone remember the name of the restaurant in the 60's or 70's that was on the northeast corner of Water and Main streets?

NO, but, last summer, an elderly man walked by my house and said he was going to the restaurant up the street to get a sandwich. I told him that I didnt' think there was any restaurant there, and he proceeded to tell me that he got a sandwich there just yesterday. He came back by, and told me that they must've moved...........poor guy. I haven't seen him since.

Do you know if he was related to the owner of the Merrick Drive-in on east Broadway where Pizza Village is presently located?

Do you remember the name of the restaurant that was on north Hart Street? It was in the building that Watson Insurance is now located and across the street from Rudy's Bakery.

Anyone remember the Cozy Cafe on I think State Street. They had the best Fried chicken. And then there was the Pool Room next to the old Gibson County Bank on the square. Burgers and fries.

Wasn't that also where the Cinnabar was?

The Cinnabar was located in the same building as Michel Oldsmobile (BMV License Branch). The Gibson Grill was a stand-alone building just north of the aforementioned building and looked similar to the current train depot (before painting) on Broadway except it had two brick pillars in front to form a covered entry with three or four steps up to enter the building. I was told that it was a depot for the Terre Haute to Evansville rail traction line that went through Princeton in the early 1900’s. You can still see where the tracks were located on the raised area in front of the trailer court on old US 41 north just west of where the old Princeton Plating Company was located. The tracks went along old US 41 and then went south down West street through Princeton.
