You're so right about that name! I remember the place, but don't think I was ever in there. Remember the older siblings talking about it.

I always enjoyed their chili. Spent a few Sat. mornings at the counter facing Broadway drinking coffee. Freddie Toler's mom waited on us most of the time.

had good cake donuts as well. I think towards the end, the name was changed to Mr. Dan's to be politically correct:D

I remember they had really good donuts. Didn't they have a bar w/stools that you could sit at?

The chili was awesome... And the burgers were cooked with finely chopped onions, but it was the coney's that were the bomb. It was never called "Mr. Dans", however, after Ray sold it, Jeff Smiths wife started a little restaurant.
(can't remember the name) she had a unique item on the menu for a while called "steak fingers". They were little slivers of round steak (or similiar) and fried. Pretty good. Not sure who was in there after that.

The chain renamed itself Mr. Dan's and there is still one near the State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis...just north of Fall Creek on Keystone Ave.

They had the best breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches that extended over 1 to 2 inches on all sides of the bun.

They had "Mr. Dan's" in Indianapolis, too. I loved their chili burger. It was an open face burger covered with chili, cheese, and onions.

OMG I used to drive a car just like the one in the picture only a different color! Man, I'm tellin' my age. I didn't mind driving that car at all back then, but can you picture any kid nowadays driving a car like that? I don't think so......

I was very young at the time, but this was my favorite place to eat. Am I remembering it right? Did it have a countertop all along the outside walls with wood spindled stools? I think it did because that is what made it my favorite. All of the stools swiveled! Greatest thing in the world to a four year old!

you are correct kgclark31. Just went to the memorial service for Ray this morning, they had some neat old pics of Ray at the counter and an old 60's era truck with his advertisement on the side. There was also a good pic of the Wake up station he owned, gas was .29cents on the sign

Hey, the Mr. Dan's restaurants in Indy once also were called Gay Dan's. I never have eaten at one. When I want that kind of food I just go to White Castle. (Lucky me; there is one w/in a mile of my house!)

When I a youngster my dad would stop there before we went fishing and get us some burgers and Milk shakes. The chocolate milk shakes is what I remember the most.....
