View Full Version : License branch building
This building started life as a Ford dealer in the teens. It was called The A.L. Maxwell Co, They sold cars truck and tractors. There first building was on East Broadway across the street from the post office. Sometime around 1920 the building was sold and the new owners sold Ford & Lincoln then switched to Chevrolet The name was also changed to Toney-Rothchild Motor Co. They sold cars there till 1937 when Englebert Michel bought the business and started selling Oldsmobiles there. He owned and operated the dealer until his death in 1961. His wife ran the dealership for one more year then her brother took it over and remained in the family until it was sold to Bob Kranitz in 1981. To this day there is still the first Oldsmobile parked in there that the delarship sold in 1937 and is still owned by members of the Michel family.

Kranitz did not go out of business. They built the new dealershipwhich is now Princeton Patriot. He then sold it to Sharretts, reclaimed it and then sold to Ide/Wilderman.
Who owned the Cinna Bar that was in the same building to the north of the car dealership?
That I dont know. I spent about 4 hours at the library researching car dealers in Princeton, that how I came about this information

What is/was the dealership on Broadway and Hall? Wasn't that Kranitz? No, wait - that was Byrne Motors wasn't it?
Byrne is still in business, as a repair shop. Pat Byrnes sister is in her 90's and still runs the place. They just lost the Chrysler franchise this year like so many other dealers but they havent had a new car on the lot since around 04 or 05.

Wasn't the ford building, or part of it, that used to be across from the jail, the license branch at one time as well?

South of there was and also at one time it was in the Princeton Appliance building that is now torn down on North Main.
the building behind the Ford dealer was the license branch for a while. Years ago it was Armstrong Welborn Company, they opened up in 1920 selling Hudson & Essex cars. Later they sold Plymouth Desoto then was Robinson Pontiac in the 50's
